Severe petal fall spotted over the prairies

Residents have been warned over the weekend of possible extreme cleanup of front and backyard due to severe petal fall coming from the apple tree, situated in the middle of backyard lane, and cherry tree, on the corner of front and right fences.

Said cleanup will be difficult and possibly pointless due to harsh winds that will be picking up the fallen petals and spewing them around again.

It will be a tough decision, but people-with-their-right-minds suggested to leave the brooms and rakes untouched and just sit under the tree and enjoy the pretty petal fall…

My astilbe. thought it was not going to come up, but now it’s bigger than my bleeding heart.

This is a new little one. I had to buy a new bleeding heart as my other one last year died.

And last but definitely not the least, my precious tree leaf peonies.

What’s happening in your garden?

I dream of lilacs

A beautiful surprise…

Everytime I would see a lilac tree teeming with beautiful flowers, I would always wish we had one in our garden. Lilacs are just so enthralling with those purplish colored flower and the fragrance!

So imagine my surprise when this seemingly insignificant, tall, bush-like plant we have in our backyard produced these cones filled with pretty little flowers! We’ve been in the house since last year but we didn’t get these flowers. I said to my partner “Don’t they look like lilac flowers to you?” She got all excited about it when she saw them too. I researched and true enough, they are lilacs!

My next question then was why didn’t it bloom last year? Since I do the layout for our 10 Neat Things weekly e-newsletter in the office (I work for the Manitoba/Alberta/Ontario Home & Gardener magazines, lucky me!) , I remember doing a 10 Neat Things about Lilacs. It turns out lilacs don’t bloom on new branches. I remember when we moved in, the top was trimmed to be as tall as the fence.  Now, we are not going to touch them till they fill up with blooms.

Maybe you have some tips for me to get more blooms from my lilac bushes?

Perks of being a gardener…

Look at what we got at the office the other day. Spring is like Christmas in a gardening magazine office!

wpid-20130521_175531.jpgI have been looking forward to this. Last year, the boss just gave us a couple of pots from the box that Proven Winners has sent her and the Superbells Lemon Slice calibrachoa hybrid was my favourite! It was absolutely stunning that I just had to have them in my garden again this year!

Anowpid-20130521_175535.jpgther fave from Proven Winners is their Superbells Cherry Star. The colours could just brighten up any garden, where ever they are placed.

I can’t wait to see how these new flowers are going to look like when they are in full bloom!

Getting the garden ready

When I woke up Sunday morning, I had a very serious conversation with myself.

Me: Get up! We need to get the garden ready for the plants!
Myself: It’s still cold!
Me: Wear a jacket! They say it’s going to get warmer later.
Myself: It’s still cold! It will always be cold! Plants don’t like cold!
Me: Get your bum off the bed and get a move on! I’ll make you a nice Filipino breakfast 🙂
Myself: I’m up! I’m hungry!

My little helpers.
They actually did a good job planting the seeds for our little greenhouse

I am just in awe every time I see my plants waking up from their winter slumber. I planted this lily just last year and it has produced little baby sprouts.

Post Script:

It did get warm enough to take the jacket off. And the sprouting and budding plants is enough to inspire me to get their bedding nice and cozy for them to rise from.
